ABOUT US

"There's history behind the Vine"

Dad Wally had been raised on the next-door spread below Helderberg & after marrying the girl-next-door, he bought Die Fonteine (Fountains) farm, being well aware of the quality of the property’s grape-friendly soils and favoured situation just a cool breeze from the Atlantic Ocean.

In 1995, having supplied grapes and wine for sale under other labels, the family decided to hoist their own flag, Somerbosch (an allusion to the farm’s situation exactly midway between Stellenbosch and Somerset West).

"South African wine by Somerbosch Wines, today..."

'Die Fonteine', home to Somerbosch Wines is relaxed and intimate, as you'd expect from a working farm that's been in the hands of the winemaking Roux family for more than half a century.

The farm is situated in the Helderberg area of the Stellenbosch region. The cool Atlantic sea breeze combines with other terroir elements on the farm to develop the complex nature of Somerbosch wines.

Since 1995, the branded premium label - "Somerbosch" - & later our entry-level label "Poker Hill" have become synonymous with the fine wines produced in this region. Our ranges of wines are innovative and varied, appealing to a wide range of palates & are in demand both locally and in various European countries.

During each vintage, we also aim through careful selection of grapes from our own specific vineyards and special care and attention, to create a wine worthy of the title Somerbosch Kylix - our Estate blend label. This wine will be released in a limited edition only, in vintages dictated by nature and will be produced with the connoisseur and serious wine lover in mind.

The entry level range, Poker Hill is a BEE venture between the farm workers of Somerbosch Wines and the owners.  The farm workers have a 70% share, while Somerbosch has a 30% share in this range.

"Above all, we'd like customers to have as much fun drinking our wines as we have making them!" say Marius & Japie.
